Couples Counseling in San Francisco » For a Stronger Relationship
When you first start marriage counseling in San Francisco, the therapist will conduct an initial screening and interview. What will be discussed in this intake process is the nature of your relationship and a deeper dive into your values, cultural background, and family background. From this interview, you and the therapist will target the specific issue you need to work through in therapy. Once discovered, the therapist will establish specific treatment goals and the structure for treatment sessions.
There are many different types of couples therapy modalities that can be personalized to meet each couple’s unique needs and issues. One such therapy is called emotionally focused therapy (EFT). This short-term form of psychotherapy was developed in the 1980s and helps couples discover and de-escalate the interaction patterns that lead to conflict. In EFT, couples also learn how to communicate and listen to each other with compassion and acceptance. Finally, the therapist works with the couple to learn healthy communication skills that strengthen their bond.
In addition to EFT, couples therapists also may use modalities such as psychotherapy, narrative therapy, solution-focused therapy, and Northern California cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Most therapists are trained in several of these modalities and will work with each couple to determine which best fits their situation. If needed, therapists can employ more than one therapy if needs change in the therapy process.
During therapy, our counselor will help you gain insight into the dynamics that create conflict and help you and your partner understand your roles in creating that dysfunction. The insight gained will direct you in changing those dysfunctional behaviors and creating healthy coping and communication skills that will help mend and heal your relationship.
