Ask Jonah (our staff acupuncturist) » The Well Clinic
Can acupuncture help to ease an addiction?
Why yes it can. Some people experience very positive response when it comes to treating withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Similar to the way that acupuncture works to mitigate pain, when applied correctly it can work with the body’s natural endorphine system to ease the cravings and anxiety associated with addiction.
Are there any natural alternatives to anti-anxiety medication?
Absolutely. There are several types of amino acids that can produce a calming effect in the body, 5-HTP and Tryptophan just to name a couple. Also, I have been quite effective with treating anxiety through acupuncture. Especially for people who are weaning off of anti-depressants or anti-anxiety medication, some of these options can be really helpful.
Are anti-depressants right for me?
You should consult your physician about this. If you don’t already have one then consider seeing a doctor or nurse practitioner here at The Well Clinic. What I will say is that every person I have talked to has a slightly different experience when it comes to anti-depressants. They can work extremely well for some while others experience only moderate change. I will say that as an acupuncturist there are some healthy options that can pair very well with anti-depressants so that you can get the maximum benefit. Consult your physician or come in and see me for an initial consultation and I can give you ideas that will be tailored to you specifically.
